Questions tagged [diesel]

A type of internal combustion engine where ignition happens when fuel is spray at high pressure into a compressed charge of air, or the relatively heavy fuel oil used in compression-ignition engines.

"A diesel engine (also known as a compression-ignition engine) is an internal combustion engine that uses the heat of compression to initiate ignition to burn the fuel, which is injected into the combustion chamber. This is in contrast to spark-ignition engines such as a petrol engine (gasoline engine) or gas engine (using a gaseous fuel as opposed to gasoline), which uses a spark plug to ignite an air-fuel mixture." -Wikipedia

Why do head gaskets fail in diesel engines?

I'm considering the purchase of a 2001 VW Golf TDI "mechanic's special", so named because it apparently has a failed head gasket (white smoke). I'm not a mechanic but I'm fairly handy with tools and figure I could probably fix it. My concern is…

Octane rating of fats and oils versus diesel fuel

I'm struggling to understand why, apart from viscosity, it's so easy to substitute lipids (i.e. SVO, WVO) for diesel fuel. I'd have to assume these fuels have inherently different octane ratings and thus require different heat and pressure values…

I have a Renault Megane 2 1.5 dci with 150,000 km on the clock. Sign the injection fault, then the engine stops or makes rattling noises. I noticed that the hose back fuel for air bubbles that appear periodically. When I hand pump the Priming Pump,…

Can you prevent the diesel bug with a silver coil?

In computer water cooling loops, it's common to use a silver coil to prevent microbial growth. Could a bigger coil secured safely in the fuel tank prevent microbial growth from forming in diesel?

When breaking in a diesel - treat it gently or drive it?

I've been googling diesel run in, and generally encounter two opinions: The first is treat it gently for the first 1000k, and do not exceed 2,000 rpm. The second is drive it at 3/4 revs, maybe 2,500 to 3,000 revs depending on the engines operating…
